You can layer the washes, sometimes up to 4 or 5 layers, and the resulting effect creates a sense of depth and texture, often necessary when painting the wear and tear of time. Watercolor is also a tool for emotional release: one must be willing to let go, and it is then that feelings can be expressed freely, sometimes furiously, as a manifestation of our inner state.
