In Lebanon, kahraba means electricity — a major topic in a country that has long failed to provide power to its people. What was once a necessity has become a farce that Lebanese would gladly do without, as they juggle between a few rare hours of state electricity and the diesel-fueled generators that fill the gap.

Pollution levels have soared due to this army of noisy, smoky machines. Their owners toy with consumers’ nerves, setting ever-changing prices, while constant power fluctuations damage home appliances. The available amperage is often so low that one forgets: you can’t run the toaster and the kettle at the same time. And when it trips — which it often does — you call Antoun, who comes to reset the breaker… sometimes ten times a day.
