Collection: Ethical Block Print and Embroidered House Linen

Using wood block-print techniques from Syria, our ethical table linen collection “Fabrics on a Voyage” showcases a precious traditional savoir-faire. We work with skilled women artisans in Lebanon to create unique designs that last for a lifetime and that preserve Syrian heritage.

The story of our artisans, Hala and Mona, and of the century-old art of block printing in the Levant shine through each piece.

We use cotton and pure linen sourced in Lebanon from textile dead stock from luxury brands to produce a sustainable fabric line based on circular economy and zero-waste ethics.

The Story

Our partner workshop
Meet Mona and Hala, our two Syrian women artisans from our partner workshop, Hikayatouna. Driven out from their country by war, they settled in Lebanon in 2012 with their families in desperate conditions.
Their daily life has been hard. The urgency to put their children in schools, the need to live and be anchored in a place they can call home are their driving forces in life - they put in all the effort possible to make it work. They joined an NGO to perfect their skills in sewing and wood block printing, a century-old savoir-faire which belongs to their heritage. They decided then to open their own workshop: Hikayatouna. But the Lebanese economic crisis and the complexity of their refugee status prevent them from growing the workshop.
Yet, they have talent, experience, courage, and a collection of remarkable wooden stamps bearing the history of the Levant. All that is missing is proper access to markets and the opportunity to sell their products.
The art of wood-block printing
In 2020, we had the chance to meet Mona and Hala in their workshop. They showed us their wood stamps and explained how they applied the almost forgotten art of wood stamp printing on textiles. We were in awe! Incredible design ideas started to flow, passionate conversations fired up, and a collaboration between [beyt] and Hikayatouna was born!
Together, we do a wonderful work of combining our skills, passion, creativity and bringing our imagination to new heights to craft stunning, unique hand-block-printed designs with ink that lasts for a lifetime.

Impact
- We pay fair wages in dollars - the devaluation of the national currency in Lebanon is getting worse by the day, and an exorbitant price increase in goods is putting Lebanon on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe. One of the few ways to survive today is getting paid in a foreign currency.
- We are proud to preserve with Hikayatouna an ancestral know-how, which would otherwise be doomed to disappear!
- We believe that creating is a therapy and that it impacts positively our daily lives.
- Giving international visibility to a small workshop’s creations has a big impact in-self: product sales allow our artisans’ families to live, which can help restore confidence in the future.
-We produce only on demand to reduce our production footprint. We use 100% cotton and linen. We source our high-quality pure linen from luxury brands fabric deadstock - textiles that were destined to go to waste!
