In August 2020, a giant blast sent a shock wave through Beirut, ripping through entire neighborhoods and killing more than 200 people.

In the immediate aftermath of the explosion, environmental engineer @ziadabichaker launched an initiative to transform shattered glass into affordable glassware.

“We could not let all this glass end up in our already overflowing landfill sites”, Ziad says.

Shop recycled glass in vibrant colors and help a team of glassblowers in Lebanon sustain their art. Empower small workshops on the verge of disappearing because of conflict and a harsh economic context. Each item is carefully blown by hand.

Glass from the blast, beauty from brokenness
One year ago, a giant blast sent a shock wave through Beirut, ripping through entire neighborhoods and killing more than 200 people.
In the immediate aftermath of the explosion, environmental engineer @ziad_abichaker launched an initiative to transform shattered glass into affordable glassware.
“We could not let all this glass end up in our already overflowing landfill sites”, Ziad says.
Since then Ziad and the #GGRIL Green Glass Recycling Initiative in Lebanon recycled 67 tons of shattered glass from the explosion. The shattered glass was sent to 2 glass recycling workshops in Tripoli that were at risk of disappearing.

Impact

The impact is also environmental, as they are no official recycling programs in Lebanon. Ziad’s workshop is amongst the only ones to recycle glass that would otherwise end up in landfills.
